September Is National Cholesterol Education Month,
Time To ‘Party Hearty’
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (September 2006) – When it comes to tailgating, people think hearty foods, not healthy foods. But September 2006 is National Cholesterol Education Month – so it’s time for the estimated 51 million Americans who tailgate during the football season to think about heart-healthy foods for their fall tailgates.
Throwing a tailgate party that’s hearty and healthy is easy with these tips from Corazonas Foods:
- Get Your Game Plan Together. By planning and shopping in advance of game day, you can make heart smart choices at the grocery store. Don’t forget grilling equipment, utensils, cups, serving plates and trash bags too!
- Kick-Off with Chili. Chili is the perfect hearty and healthy tailgate food. Keep it low in fat by using beans and lean ground meats and kick up the flavor with garlic, chili peppers and aromatics like scallions rather than adding salt. Top it off with fat-free sour cream and shredded cheddar.
- Score Points with Surprise Plays! Score points with your guests by servin’ up surprisingly tasty heart-healthy alternatives like Corazonas tortilla chips (just don’t forget the fat-free salsa).
- Lean & Mean. First string players should be lean and mean – so should your featured entrées. Serve low-fat turkey burgers instead of beef. Wings are delicious, but cook ‘em up and with skin removed to cut saturated fat.
- Side(line) Substitutes. Make potato salads and slaws with a non-fat vinaigrette instead of mayonnaise.
- Party Hearty! Dress up in your team’s colors and remember that tailgating is about gathering to celebrate with those people you ’heart‘ like friends and family!
About National Cholesterol Education Month
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute declared September 2006 to be National Cholesterol Education Month. This year’s theme, "Know your cholesterol numbers—Know your risk—Give yourself some TLC," calls for American adults, especially the more than 107 million with borderline to high blood cholesterol levels, to make the therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) needed to lower their cholesterol.
Among the TLC dietary guidelines suggested, consumers should eat:
- Less than 7% of the day's total calories from saturated fat
- 25-35 percent or less of the day’s total calories from fat
- Less than 200 milligrams of dietary cholesterol a day
- Limit sodium intake to 2400 milligrams a day
- Just enough calories to achieve or maintain a healthy weight and reduce your blood cholesterol level. (Ask your doctor or registered dietitian what is a reasonable calorie level for you.)
